BASIC
LIST OF EQUIPMENT FOR PAINTING
Basics
Please bear in mind that this is a very basic list – the possibilities of colours, brushes, solvents, retardants and other additives are almost endless.
Zest-It: a non-toxic solvent for oil painting, available at the studio or Art Source in Observatory.(we do not use turpentine in the studio because of allergic reactions)
Refined Linseed Oil: Zellen produces a cheap, local version that is good.
Zelkin: a resin based medium that is useful for fast drying and luminosity. But not essential.
Brushes: hogs hair or synthetic but not soft. A variety of shapes, such as filberts, flats, brites, rounds. A variety of sizes depending on what size you want your paintings to be and whether you like detail or not.
Good brands are: Windsor and Newton, Daler-Rowney, Eve (green painted handle only) and Raphael. (please avoid cheap brushes, they are hard to work with and break down quickly)
Paints: Titanium White. Then choose at least 6 colours from the following list: Prussian Blue, French Ultramarine, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Sap Green, Viridian, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow or Lemon Yellow. (Please make sure you have at least one of each colour in the spectrum represented.)
Additional useful colours are: Naples Yellow, Paynes Grey, Magenta, Cobalt Violet, Permanent Rose, Indian Yellow, Raw Umber.
Most of these colours are available in student ranges. The best brands are: Winton, Art Prisim, Daler-Rowney.
Artists colours are expensive but as you extend your range there are many lovely colours to work with. Best brands available in SA are: Windsor and Newton, Art Spectrum, Rembrandt, Sennelier. Currently the studio has access to Michael Harding Oils – these are handmade and of the highest quality.
Rags: good quality cotton rags that do not disperse lint. Old sheets or pillow-cases are ideal if they are pure cotton. Avoid dish cloths or other cleaning cloths. Also do not use toilet paper and kitchen towel unless it is simply to wipe brushes on.
Palette: Perspex, glass or disposable. The brown, wooden palettes are difficult to read colour on.
Jars: 2 medium sized and 1 small.
Sunflower Oil and Sunlight Liquid for cleaning brushes.
Canvasses of various sizes depending on your inclination.
Two WORK BOOKS. These are to be used for sketching ideas, making notes, gathering visual information and material. One is to be completely personal with the idea that thoughts and ideas you have but do not want to share are explored. The other is for more general use and for sharing ideas with me. These books are COMPULSORY.

EQUIPMENT LIST FOR DRAWING
Willow Charcoal: various thicknesses. Avoid Ashrad brand, it is poor quality. Currently you can get Coates – this is good charcoal.
Compressed Charcoal.
White Conte Chalk. (there are other brands that are good, just not chalk-board chalk or chalk pastel)
Pencils: ranging from HB to 8B
Kneadable Rubber
Plastic Rubber
Art Knife
Sharpener
Fine Sand Paper
Black Fine Liner
2 Bulldog Clips
This is a basic list. There are many other drawing materials worth exploring and opportunities in the drawing classes will arise where you will be encouraged to experiment.
The studio provides certain basic drawing papers but you will be encouraged to try out other paper as your confidence grows.

CODE OF CONDUCT IN THE STUDIO:
The ethos of Spencer Street Studio is one where the creativity of each individual is considered to be of vital importance. As the sole lecturer at the studio (at present) and director of the school and collective of painters and printmakers, I have made it the governing principle of the studio that it be a good place for artists and potential artists to explore their creativity. For this to be possible, it is important that each member of the studio, artists and students alike, respect the following rules:
PUNCTUALITY:
Arrive at class promptly. If you are late for class, make as quiet an entrance as possible. (Please do not burst in, booming greetings and getting into chatter with other class members.) If you arrive late, do not expect that I will drop everything to get to you as soon as you arrive. I try to go around on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.
NOISE:
Do not engage in conversation during class time, especially while I am teaching. I find myself competing to be heard. It is also very inconsiderate to others who are trying to concentrate. Asking fellow class mates for assistance with your work is acceptable, but try not to raise your voices and giggle etc. If you wish to chat over a cup of tea, go outside.
CRITICISM:
There will be a brief group crit at the end of some sessions. Morning sessions: 12:15 – 12:45. (15 mins for clean up afterwards.) This will be the only time students will be encouraged to offer opinions of each other’s work. (I would also like to discourage you from going around the studio when you are not painting and exclaiming over other people’s work. It is distracting, however well meant.)
CLEAN UP:
Put away the equipment in its designated place in an orderly manner. Take home the food you brought with you, or store it in the fridge. Wash up utensils and cups.
CELL PHONES:
These are major irritants to others trying to work and students are requested to put their phones on silent and to take and make calls outside or in the kitchen.

SPENCER STREET STUDIO DOES NOT ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR ALLERGIC REACTIONS TO THE SOLVENTS AND OTHER MATERIALS USED IN THE STUDIO.
IN TERMS OF THIS IT IS IMPORTANT TO READ THE FOLLOWING STUDIO REGULATIONS CAREFULLY:

3. You may store materials in a toolbox that can be stored under the tables in the main studio. However, if materials go missing or are used by someone else it is not the responsibility of Spencer Street Studio. If your materials do not fit in the toolbox they must go home with you. Any stuff left lying around will be disposed with.
