A core aspect of Spencer Streets Studio is the development of collaborative projects that encourage students to participate in efforts that value the collective over the individual.
SPECIAL PROJECTS:
These are projects that are conceptually focused on something in particular. The Cart Horse Auction entailed the realizing of a central work that engaged all members of the studio in the making. In addition all members of the studio, students and lecturers alike worked to make additional work for auction and sale as well as administrate, design, fund-raise and cater the event.
Currently we are engaged on a project entailing a detailed recording in paint of a randomly selected piece of Karoo ground. This is a painstaking task and will take approximately 18 months to complete. In order not to foreclose the final developmental stages of the project, the final outcome will not be determined at this stage.
EXHIBITIONS:
Group and solo exhibitions are held at the studio or elsewhere. The idea is that students assist those exhibiting with a range of tasks, including curating, administering, catering and hanging/installing the work. The intention is make it possible for all the students to exhibit at some point in there tenure at the studio as well as to school them in the various complexities involved in staging exhibitions.
